Specialist Car Insurance Broker

Frequently Asked Questions

Specialist cover, modifications and how we work as your broker.

What makes Brentacre a specialist car insurance broker?

At Brentacre, we're a team of genuine enthusiasts with a passion for all things automotive. We understand the culture behind modified, performance, imported and classic vehicles, and the reasons owners choose to personalise them. Whether you've enhanced your car with subtle OEM+ upgrades, built a show car, created a track-focused project or restored a classic with period-correct accessories, we understand the mission.

We recognise the purpose, value and appeal that modifications bring to a vehicle, and we take the time to understand what those changes mean to you as an owner.

We work closely with a carefully selected panel of specialist insurers who share our appreciation for enthusiast vehicles. When modifications are declared and accepted, they are taken into account by the insurer when assessing a claim. If your vehicle is repairable, aftermarket parts can be repaired or replaced on a like-for-like basis where covered under the policy. In the event of a total loss, the insurer will assess the vehicle's market value and take declared modifications into consideration.

We recognise that modified vehicles are often worth more than their standard counterparts, which is why we help bridge the gap between enthusiast owners and specialist insurers. By taking the time to understand both the vehicle and its owner, we can help arrange cover tailored to your individual needs and requirements.

Is Brentacre regulated by the FCA?

Yes. Brentacre Insurance Services Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Firm Reference Number 307060. The FCA is the UK's financial services regulator and sets the standards that insurance brokers must follow when arranging insurance and looking after their customers.

Being FCA regulated means we are required to operate fairly, act to deliver good outcomes for customers, maintain robust processes and meet strict regulatory standards. You can verify our authorisation at any time via the FCA Register.

Can I speak to someone instead of quoting online?

Of course. While we offer the option to submit quote requests online, many of our customers prefer to speak directly with one of our team.

No two drivers or vehicles are the same, especially when it comes to modified, imported, performance and classic cars. That's why we're always happy to discuss your requirements, answer any questions and help you find the right cover for both you and your vehicle.

We understand that insurance can sometimes feel confusing, particularly when modifications, agreed values, vehicle usage or specialist requirements are involved. Our knowledgeable team will take the time to explain your options in plain English and help make the process as straightforward as possible.

If you'd rather speak to a real person than fill in forms online, we're only a phone call away on 01792 650 933.

Do modifications always increase my premium?

Not always. Many common modifications can be added at no additional cost, though this is always subject to individual assessment.

Generally, modifications that don't increase the vehicle's power output can often be covered without affecting the premium. This also includes breathing modifications such as exhaust systems, induction kits and intercoolers, provided the vehicle retains the manufacturer's standard ECU software.

Where modifications increase performance, such as ECU remaps, upgraded turbochargers or superchargers, uprated engine internals or fuel system upgrades, an additional premium may apply. Similarly, if modifications significantly increase the vehicle's value, we may need to adjust the insured value accordingly.

Every vehicle is different, so we'll always assess modifications on a case-by-case basis and explain any impact on cover or premium before you proceed.

The important thing is to declare all modifications, even if they don't increase your premium.

What modifications do I need to declare?

All modifications must be declared, no matter how small.

In the event of a claim, we provide the specification we hold for your vehicle to your insurer so that repairs or any total loss settlement are handled correctly.

When you take out a policy with Brentacre, we'll ask you to complete a modification report form through our website. Please include as much detail as possible, including:

  • Brands and manufacturers
  • Model names
  • Materials used
  • Colours and finishes

The more information we have, the better we can understand exactly what we're insuring.

If you add new modifications or make changes to existing ones during your policy term, simply contact our admin team by phone or email to let us know.

If you're planning modifications that will increase your vehicle's brake horsepower (BHP) or overall modified market value, we recommend speaking to us before the work is carried out, as an additional premium may be required.

Can you insure imported vehicles?

Yes. We can insure most UK-registered imported vehicles, providing they fit within the appetite of our insurance schemes.

We can also arrange cover on a vehicle's chassis (VIN) number to help with the registration process. Please note that the vehicle cannot be used on the road until you have provided us with its UK registration number and we have updated your policy accordingly.

As imported vehicles can present a higher theft risk, any vehicle that was originally manufactured and registered outside of the UK will be subject to our minimum security requirements. Evidence that these requirements have been met must be provided for theft cover to remain valid under the policy.

If you're unsure whether your vehicle qualifies, our team will be happy to discuss your vehicle and any security requirements before cover is arranged. You can read more on our imported car insurance page.

Do I need a tracker or additional security?

Not necessarily. If additional security is required, it will only apply to the theft section of your cover.

The makes, models and dates below are a general guide only. Actual security requirements are assessed and confirmed for your specific vehicle during the quotation process.

For some vehicles that are considered more susceptible to theft methods such as relay attacks, we may require a Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser. This commonly applies to certain:

  • Ford models (typically manufactured from 2009 onwards)
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R models (2013 onwards)
  • Audi S and RS models (2012 onwards)
  • SEAT Cupra models
  • BMW M models
  • Honda Civic Type R models

Imported vehicles and engine-swapped vehicles will often require Thatcham Category 1 security for theft cover to remain valid.

For higher-value or higher-risk vehicles, we may also require a tracking device to assist with vehicle recovery in the event of theft.

Classic vehicles may instead require a form of mechanical immobilisation. In these circumstances, you'll be asked to complete a Mechanical Immobilisation Declaration confirming what has been installed to protect the vehicle. We can typically accept:

  • Battery isolators
  • Fuel cut-off switches
  • Steering wheel locks
  • Pedal box locks
  • Gear locks
  • Wheel clamps

Any security requirements will be clearly explained during the quotation process, and our team will be happy to discuss the options available if your vehicle requires additional protection.

How quickly can I get a quote?

We aim to contact you as quickly as possible after you submit a quote request online. In most cases, if your enquiry is received before 4:00pm on a working weekday, we'll be in touch the same day.

If you need a quote urgently, the quickest way to speak to our team is by calling 01792 650 933.

As a specialist broker, we arrange cover for a wide range of modified, imported, classic and performance vehicles. In some cases, we may need to refer your details directly to an insurer so that we arrange the most suitable cover for your vehicle.

Because of this, we cannot guarantee turnaround times for every quotation. However, any quote that can be provided within our delegated authority will be processed as quickly as possible, often during the same phone call or shortly after your enquiry is received.

Am I insured to drive in Europe?

Yes. All our road-use policies include some form of European cover, though the level, duration and terms vary and important conditions apply.

As standard, European cover is provided for social, domestic and pleasure use only. If you require cover for a different purpose, we may be able to refer your request to the insurer and, in some cases, arrange extended cover for an additional premium.

The exact level of cover, duration and terms will be explained during the quotation process and confirmed within the insurance documents we send you once your policy is arranged.

Before travelling, you must notify us of your European travel plans. This can be done through our website or by contacting our team directly. To help make sure everything is in place before you leave the UK, we recommend submitting your travel request at least 14 days in advance.

Failure to notify us of your European travel dates may result in only the minimum level of cover required by law being available in the event of an incident. It could also affect our ability to offer renewal terms in the future.

If you're unsure what level of European cover applies to your policy, our team will be happy to explain your cover before you travel.

Can I take my car on a track day?

Absolutely. However, most road insurance policies do not include track day cover as standard unless specifically stated in your policy schedule.

At Brentacre, we offer specialist track day insurance solutions for professionally organised track days. This cover is exclusively available to Brentacre policyholders and cannot be purchased on a standalone basis.

If you already insure your vehicle with Brentacre and would like to explore track day cover, please visit our track day insurance page or contact our team to discuss your requirements.

We offer multiple levels of cover to suit different vehicles and track day experiences, allowing you to enjoy your time on circuit knowing you are protected should the unexpected happen.

Our team will be happy to explain the available options, eligibility criteria and cover limits before your event.
